Cost of Assisted Living in Florida
According to the 2012 A Place for Mom Senior Living Costs Survey, the median monthly cost to live in an assisted living one bedroom apartment in Florida is $3,447.



Assisted Living Terms in Florida

Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted Living Licensing in Florida

    • Standard licensure is required for all assisted living facilities.
    • A separate license is required for extended congregate care and mental health services.


Staff Training

    • Direct-care staff other than nurses, certified nursing assistants, or home health aides must complete at least one hour of training in infection control, including universal precautions and facility sanitation procedures, before providing personal care to residents.
    • An additional three hours of training on resident behavior and needs and assistance with activities of daily living must be completed within 30 days of employment.
    • All staff must complete a continuing education course on HIV and AIDS biennially. Staff who prepare or serve food must complete a minimum one hour training covering safe food handling practices within 30 days of employment.


Overnight Staffing

    • If a facility has over 17 residents, there must be at least one person awake and on staff at all times.
    • Depending on the number of residents, there must be a minimum of 168 staff hours per week and a maximum of 539 hours per week.


Eviction Laws and Resident Protections

    • Facilities must provide the resident 45 days notice of eviction.
    • No reason is needed and the staff does not need to help evicted residents find new lodging.
    • Residents are entitled to the Resident Bill of Rights which states that residents in a facility shall not be deprived of any civil or legal rights. 


Inspection Laws

    • County health department officials are responsible for inspecting all license applications and licensed facilities.
    • All facilities are required to be in compliance with local safety and building codes.

This site allows you to search by city and state for a wide range of housing options (active retirement communities, independent living, assisted living, nursing homes, continuing care retirement communities, and housing for people with Alzheimer’s). Also included on this site are articles on related topics such as the different types of senior housing, how to select senior housing, and your financing options.
AARP
This site provides consumer information on a range of housing topics. Here you will find articles and checklists on home modification and safety issues, nursing homes, assisted living, continuing care retirement communities, housing options such as home sharing, and more. The information is geared towards all types of housing situations from living on your own to living with full-time care.
How Well Does Your Home Meet Your Needs?:
This article and assessment tool, originally from AARP, guides you through looking at your current home to determine if it is supporting your safety and independence. This article includes a short quiz to evaluate specific aspects of your home for safety and usability, for example, whether you can easily open and close your windows. The website enables you to search by zip code for an affordable apartment in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Lake County.
